Senior Analyst/Associate - Hedge Funds & Credit

Job Description

UTIMCO’s credit portfolio has approximately $2 billion invested with external managers across public and private markets.  The Senior Analyst or Associate will be responsible for monitoring current relationships, sourcing and evaluating potential investment opportunities, and executing projects to help monitor managers and the portfolio.  UTIMCO invests primarily via funds, partnerships and direct co-investments.  This offers a unique opportunity to work across the entire credit spectrum, ranging from “long only” loan and bond opportunities (corporate and sovereign), distressed securities, capital structure arbitrage, direct lending, non-performing loan portfolios, illiquid opportunities, and distressed for control positions.  Experience investing directly in credit markets is preferred.  Broad responsibilities include:

  • Manage relationships including monitoring individual manager performance and risk on a regular basis, building strong relationships with each manager, and conducting periodic due diligence updates and on-site visits with key investment and operations personnel
  • Primarily responsible for credit investments and will gain exposure to other hedge fund strategies as well
  • Develop capacity to lead comprehensive due diligence process for evaluating and underwriting prospective mangers including in-depth analysis of investment strategy, performance and risk, manager strengths and weaknesses, risk management, operations, reference checks, and thorough review of relevant legal documents with input from outside counsel
  • Assist senior professionals with asset allocation decisions and portfolio evaluation, considering available capacity with existing manager relationships and liquidity impact of new additions
  • Provide analytical support for reporting, presentations and research projects
  • Source and assess new investment opportunities by establishing trusted industry contacts, meeting prospective funds, attending relevant industry events, performing qualitative and quantitative analysis, and maintaining current  prospective manager database
  • Assist with and participate in regular reviews of the portfolio, including analysis of the portfolio’s performance and risk characteristics
  • Maintain current knowledge of markets by monitoring current financial publications as well as leveraging contacts with outside research/industry professionals and conducting ad hoc research as necessary
  • 2-5 years of professional experience in finance or investment-related field
  • Must represent UTIMCO in the marketplace with the highest professionalism
  • A collegial team player possessing intellectual curiosity and sound judgment
  • Degree in finance, accounting or economics from a reputable institution
  • Constructive, “can do” attitude committed to consistently doing what is best for the organization
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, communication, presentation, and organizational skills are essential to success in this role
  • Well-versed in Microsoft Excel and in financial applications (e.g. Bloomberg, Factset)
  • Must display high character, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail
  • Domestic and international travel

Preferred Qualifications
  • Investment banking, capital markets or leveraged finance experience
  • Experience in an investing role at an institutional asset manager (endowment or foundation, pension, family office or fund of funds) in credit opportunities
